EARTH MAGIC:
Making Sustainable Choices
An Environmental Magic Show
Bob Fellows, author of Easily Fooled: New Insights & Techniques for Resisting Manipulation, has spent a lifetime demonstrating how we can be misled, and how to be more in charge of our lives. In his stage presentation, Earth Magic, he applies his skills as a philosopher, minister, and magician to the issue of sustainability. Young people are especially passionate about saving the environment, and in this lively presentation, Bob Fellows motivates them to act on their passion using compelling statistics, stories, illustrations, and professional magic.
Bob shows youth that we need to work together. One person can make a difference, but it will take many of us to solve the problem. Its not too late, but the time is now. We need to wake up, challenge our assumptions, and make sustainable choices starting today. We will transform our lives as we protect our future.
The presentation shows that we are all interconnected. We need bio-diversity, and diversity in our cultures. When we keep getting water from the tap, the lights still turn on, and gas stations are selling gas, we can be fooled into thinking that it is not urgent to save our planet. But pollution does not reach a critical mass all at once. When were not looking, it can easily go too far.
Young people leave the presentation feeling that they can make a difference. We live in a modern culture. We are the ones who consume the most. We will each probably make choices with over a million dollars in our lifetime. Will those choices truly be our own? Will they be sustainable choices? Bob Fellows' goal is that youth will answer "yes" to both questions after participating in this presentation.
Should we be concerned about the environment because we want a sustainable planet for our future? Thats part of the story. The other part is that making sustainable choices transforms us in the present. When we are good stewards of our resources, our awareness and appreciation for life increases. Our lives are richer if we lead a less consumptive lifestyle. This is a presentation that gets young people thinking, and empowers them to transform their passion into action.
I cant thank you enough for the amazing environmental magic show you recently put on for all of us at Green Acre Bahá'í school. The show was one of the highlights of our five-day program, Environmental Stewards: Champions of Justice! You combine gifted showmanship with a powerful social message that we live on a precious, interconnected planet; its ours to take care of, and we can! I believe your program really contributed to the sense of empowerment expressed in a letter to self written on the final day by one of the kids and echoed by many: You have potential! Use it! Show the world you care! You can make a difference!
